Wordpress is perhaps the most widely used blogging platform. You can have a free blog hosted by them (wordpress.com) or host your own (wordpress.org) and in addition you can install a multi-user self hosted version of the software called Wordpress Mu. The selfhosted versions are more versatile but require a minimum of programming knowledge. The version hosted by Wordpress is a good place to start. You can choose CSS themes and widgets to make it your own. Some advanced functionality may come at a modest price.
