Will CES (Consumer Electronics Show) herald a definitive breakthrough in the long emerging trend of: "The Internet Of Things", meaning that more and more "real world" appliances are integrated with the web, talking to you and talking to each other?
More and more appliances are in effect becoming networked appliances with basic communication and interaction capabilities.
From turning on the lighting and heating in your house, to cooking or driving your car: will machines be able to do all these things for you when you tell them to and interact with you about these tasks?
Apparently so. From tablet PC's that double as universal remotes, networked TV's with social media integration and other appliances: people have been hard at work for a decade to connect objects to the web.
How will this effect your experience of the world and the way you conduct business or market your services?
Will the added convenience render you silly or will you finally be able to focus on the things you want to do?

Solar and wind energy systems are monitored based on performance and other environmental conditions. For example, the Solar Prospector monitors solar conditions for matching to commercial system performance and making accurate forecasts: http://tapthesun.com/Prospector-Main.html Oregon Scientific is makes home-based weather monitoring systems useful for similar purposes. http://www.oregonscientific.com/
When we attempt to control our local environment without analyzing feedback, we lose a sense of reality. With power utility bills, we get feedback once a month about how we consume energy. Much of the US uses this as the main means to monitor energy consumption. Unless we learn to read the power usage meter and track usage directly, associating real energy usage with specific activities is difficult. The same could be said of driving cars without responsive fuel-efficiency gauges. Without the efficiency gauge, drivers can only tell their rate of consumption by frequency of gas tank fills (and perhaps the rate of dropping of the fuel gauge).
Some marketers are looking at creating social networking "points" to reward for consumer behavior (watching certain TV shows with product placement, participating in activities that promote or use specific products etc). Rewarding short-sighted activity for financial gain has the potential of helping to distance consumers further from reality if not kept in check. The common wealth of community could be undermined if people choose to isolate themselves from their local surroundings for individual gain. Hmm.. am I doing that? At least using a smart phone / iphone gives one the opportunity to be mobile, if only so one can stare at the little screen for a significant amount of time while out and about.
Job, it seems the virtual will help accelerate both extremes of getting Real and Virtual.
Maybe a question to ask is: How to manage the virtual world in the real one?
new year cheers,
Benjamin
